The central significance of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) to baroque keyboard music can hardly be overestimated. Siegbert Rampe’s scholarly performance edition is the first complete edition of Sweelinck’s keyboard music to distinguish between »works of certain authenticity« and »works of doubtful authenticity.« This edition, scheduled to fill seven volumes with a bilingual commentary in German and English, stands at the forefront of scholarship. Volume II.1, together with its companion volume II.2, are the first volumes to include all of the 22 fantasias and echo fantasias, the four ricercari, and one capriccio attributed to Sweelinck or handed down under his name. Four other fantasias are included in an appendix. Several of the compositions appear for the first time in various versions which are thought to be authentic.
