This CD-ROM marks the conclusion of RISM Series A/I »Einzeldrucke vor 1800« and offers an alternative and optimal completion to the fourteen printed volumes published between 1972 and 2003. With this, the largest collection of sources of printed music works worldwide is presented in contemporary electronic form most suited to the items in question. The CD-ROM offers scholars, musicians, libraries and antiquarian music dealers - in short all professionals and institutions working with music - a tremendous working tool in researching historical music prints. In printed book form, Series A/I comprises 9 main volumes, 4 supplementary volumes and an index volume - a total of approx. 8,000 pages. For the CD-ROM, the contents fo the 9 main volumes have been converted into a database and expanded with new entries from the supplementary volumes. Composer names, library sigla and work catalogues comply with the standard versions used in Series A/II Musikhandschriften nach 1600 and have been brought up-to-date and linked with the corresponding authority files. This means that the contents of these authority files with many cross-references, precise citations and library addresses are available to users. In addition, generic key words and, where possible, details of scoring have been included. In total, the database contains over 100,000 entries. The considerable advantage of the CD-ROM lies in the search possibilities, for example searching title information for concepts (full text search, not just individual indices). In general, the multitude of search functions which the CD-ROM offers is far superior to traditional searching in a book index. Thus, for the first time, users can find the answers to questions such as: »Which masses were published in London in 1750?« - »Which libraries contain printed copies of Haydn's works?« - »How many editions did Artaria publish in 1780?« Generic key words are, as is customary in RISM, in English. Composer names, all place and publisher names as well as other terms have been standardised to optimise searching. Database entries appear as full text and resemble titles in the printed volume in their layout.
