Handel wrote his masque Acis and Galatea in the spring of 1718 while staying with the Earl of Carnarvon in Cannons. He patterned his work less on Purcell's masques than on those of more recent composers, especially Pepusch's Apollo and Daphne. Masques took their subject-matter from ancient myth and pastoral poetry. Formally, they are a string of recitatives and arias with a concluding chorus and interpolated dances. Handel's piece stands out for its multiple use of the chorus and its avoidance of dance numbers. His solo scoring of the choruses reveals the connection to the Italian serenata, then scarcely known in England. Our vocal score follows the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition.

This opera, written to a libretto by Vittorio Amedeo Cigna-Santi, was premièred at the Regio Ducal Teatro in Milan on 26 December 1770. It was an extraordinary success for the young composer. Though formally beholden to the traditional patterns of opera seria, Mozart's setting attains a variety and urgency of expression far transcending the convention of its day, above all through its concentration on large-scale design.
Our vocal score follows the Urtext from the New Mozart edition. The German translation was supplied by Eberhard Schmid.

Dramma per musica in three acts K. 135

Thanks to the rousing success of Mitridate, Mozart was commissioned to write another work for the Regio Ducal Teatro in Milan: an opera based on a libretto by Giovanni di Gamerra. The result, Lucio Silla, opened the annual carnival season on 26 December 1772. Quite apart from the colorful orchestration (Mozart seldom uses the same combination of instruments in adjoining numbers), the remarkable fusion of formal components into large-scale scenic complexes, especially in the first act, amply demonstrates Mozart's tendency to blur the boundaries between recitative, aria, ensemble and chorus.

NEW!

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Four Masses
Great Choral Works
in new performing editions

· completely new orchestral material

· completely new vocal scores

Already published in 2000:

Johann Sebastian Bach

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Franz Schubert
Since the beginning of the year 2000 Bärenreiter issued seventeen major choral works by Bach, Mozart and Schubert. Now another four masses by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are about to appear in new performing editions.
The orchestral material is completely new: page turns have been considerably improved, cue notes appear in transposition, and the printing quality is above reproach. The same applies to the completely new vocal scores, which set new standards in straightforward playabilitiy and perfect appearance on the page - all based, of course, on the time-honoured Bärenreiter Urtext tradition.
