  • Hector Berlioz's »Harold en Italie« was originally conceived for and comissioned by Niccolò Paganini as a virtuoso viola concerto. This work, which eventually evolved into a Symphony in four movements with solo viola, is not only of significant importance in Berlioz's œuvre but one of the milestones in the viola literature. None other than Franz Liszt was the first to make an arrangement of this work for viola and piano in 1837, some three years after its composition. This arrangement, though first published only 1879, had, as one might guess when hearing the name Liszt, an extremely difficult piano part which covered the somewhat introspective qualities of the viola writing.
The present new piano reduction by the internationally noted Berlioz scholar Hugh Macdonald is uniquely suited for preparations for performances with orchestra. In addition, the solo viola part contains music taken from the orchestra fabric which can be used to infuse performances with just piano accompaniment. The additional music for solo viola is presented above the Urtext viola part as ossias and in the keyboard part it is presented in small print. The solo viola part has been very judicially prepared with helpful fingerings an bowings by the renowned French violist Frédéric Lainé.

    Complete String Quintets

    • Complete collection of Mozart's quintet output
    • Urtext from New Mozart Edition, revised on the basis of the original source
    • Detailed introduction to Mozart's quintets and their historical context

Drawing on the revised Urtext from the New Mozart Edition, this study score contains everything Mozart contributed to the string quintet genre.

It includes not only the six well known quintets in B-flat major (K. 174), C major (K. 515), G minor (K. 516), C minor (K. 406/516b), D major (K. 593) and E-flat major (K. 614), but drafts and rejected versions from these works as well as all known quintet fragments.
Originally published in 1967, the text has been rechecked and revised as necessary on the basis of the autographs. The autograph scores of K. 174 and K. 515, neither of which was available for the 1967 edition, have been consulted for the first time. Manfred Hermann Schmid, professor of musicology at Tübingen University, has provided a three-part introduction. Part 1 illuminates the history of the genre and places Mozart's contribution in its historical context, while Part 2 discusses the chronology and genesis of Mozart's string quintets and Part 3 deals with problems specific to each work. Schmid's lengthy introduction thus serves as a concise monograph on Mozart's quintets that conveys valuable insights to musicians, students, and all admirers of Mozart's chamber music masterpieces.

Hortus Musicus provides a distinguished and varied chamber music repertoire for a wide variety of instruments and levels of difficulty to meet the needs of performers today.
The series will be expanded from the early baroque and classical periods to encompass the 19th century.
This scholarly-critical edition is based on two manuscripts from the Biblioteca Estense in Modena, the sole sources for Gabrielli's works for unaccompanied cello. The seven ricercares form a milestone in the history of the instrument, being the very first compositions for unaccompanied cello. Two ricercares and one sonata written in scordatura are here reproduced twice, once in their original sounding notation suitable for performance on modern instruments (with minor changes), an again in scordatura notation. This volume reflects the editor's years of experience in historical performance practice and provides an ideal basis for authentic performances.

This scholarly-critical volume is the first published edition of Meyerbeer's Clarinet Quintet, which vanished in World War II and only recently resurfaced in the estate of the clarinetist Carl Bärmann. Meyerbeer wrote the piece in Vienna in 1813 for his friend Heinrich Bärmann, a celebrated clarinettist to whom C. M. von Weber also dedicated several works. The extremely novel and virtuoso handling of the clarinet was unusual for its day: Meyerbeer allows it to stand out clearly from the string ensemble and pushes it to the utmost limits of its technique. The work enriched the meager chamber music repertoire for the clarinet in the 19th century. Our scholarly-critical edition makes this masterpiece available to performers for the first time in print. Besides the musical text, it offers a critical report and a detailed preface discussing the work's genesis. The parts have been given performance markings by Dieter Klöcker.
