Ludwig van Beethoven
In autumn 1996 Bärenreiter announced its intention to publish, within a five-year period,
a new urtext edition of Beethoven’s symphonies in conjunction with the renowned English
musicologist and Beethoven scholar Jonathan Del Mar. When the Ninth Symphony appeared in
early 1997 the critics were ecstatic, and the new edition set out on its path to conquer
the world. The leading conductors and orchestras immediately subscribed to the complete
series, and the new edition drew praise in the highest terms.

| »So the main achievement of this edition is the removal of hundreds of errors that crept into the first edition and have been perpetuated, or have multiplied, in subsequent editions. And no one comparing Del Mar with any other edition of the Ninth can fail to be struck by the number of errors that have been identified and expunged.« (Musical Times) | |||
